The Romantic Spirit: Wild and Tender The major piece on the program is Brahms’ exuberant Zigeunerlieder, which NAS last sang in 2001. With it, Mendelssohn part songs and a new piece by Carol Barnett on two texts, one English (Dryden), one Latin. Chamber Chorus will do two of Haydn’s lovely secular part songs and an exciting setting by Robert Cohen of Wallace Stevens’ poem Peter Quince at the Clavier. Tango Mass
Tango Mass Martin Palmeri has written a splendid work, Misa a Buenos Aires or Misatango with strings and bandoneon, premiered in 1996 and performed frequently since then. This is a wonderfully successful hybrid. The chorus sings the Latin Mass with excellent contrapuntal lines, not unlike what you might expect from Bach or Mozart, but with zippier rhythm.
