Blow, Thou Winter Wind
Songs of the season, from a Bach classic to new choral gems
Our first concert features our signature mix of classic and contemporary choral works, all reflections on the winter season. Highlights include Jake Runestad’s “Proud Music of the Storm,” set to the poetry of Walt Whitman, the first movement of J.S. Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio,” Mari Esabel Valverde’s “Patterns on the Snow,” and former New Amsterdam Singers member Reena Esmail’s “Winter Breviary.”

Sounds of the Americas
A joint concert with the Jackson Heights Orchestra
Joined by the Jackson Heights Orchestra, we’ll give the U.S. premiere of José Maurício Nunes Garcia’s “Missa Mimosa.” Nunes Garcia, a Brazilian composer little known in the U.S., was a contemporary of Mozart and Haydn, and his work combines their vernacular with Latin American influences. Filling out the program is music from other Central and South American composers, including Astor Piazzola’s “Verano Porteño” and Carlos Guastavino’s “Indianas.”

Earth Songs
Celebrating the natural world—and new musical voices
Our spring concert will highlight the winners of our first Young Composer Competition, with commissions from one college-age and one high school-age composer. All the repertoire, including these new works, will be centered on the theme of the natural world. The remainder of the program features Alex Berko’s “A Sacred Place,” Jennifer Lucy Cook’s “They Are Mother,” Ronald Perera’s “earthsongs,” and Leonard Bernstein’s “Make Our Garden Grow.” Joining us will be singers from the Renaissance High School for Musical Theater and the Arts.
