Tango Mass
Martin Palmeri has written a splendid work, Misa a Buenos Aires or Misatango with strings and bandoneon, premiered in 1996 and performed frequently since then. This is a wonderfully successful hybrid. The chorus sings the Latin Mass with excellent contrapuntal lines, not unlike what you might expect from Bach or Mozart, but with zippier rhythm. Strings and bandoneon supply a great background that is definitely tango inspired. And the combination works! We have chosen an excellent bandoneon player who has played the piece many times. Chamber Chorus will continue the “Latin” theme, with a return to Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Romancero Gitano with guitar. Our guitar player is a star student of Sharon Isbin at Juilliard.
