This event has already taken place.

Black American Composers
clockwise from upper left: Florence Price, Joel Thompson, Adolphus Hailstork, William Grant Still, Rosephanye Powell, and William Dawson

In celebration of Black History Month, join New Amsterdam Singers music director Clara Longstreth in a look at the rich history of Black composers in classical music. This program of musical excerpts and discussion will span the works of early to mid-20th century pioneers William Grant Still, William Dawson, and Florence Price and a new choral work by Joel Thompson inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. Plus, we’ll preview choral works planned for future NAS concerts and even have a chance to sing along with a memorable hymn.

The New Amsterdam Singers’ Music in Place series offers virtual gatherings to sing together, listen to recitals, learn from composers, and more. Attendance is open to the full NAS community: singers, alums, and audience. Register to receive access information.
