SUMMARY:The World of Dreams – Online Stream
DESCRIPTION:This ticket is for online streaming. After purchasing your ticket\, you will receive a link to the streaming page via email. The event will be available for live viewing and replay through April 1\, 2023. In-person tickets are available here. \nNew Amsterdam Singers salutes American composers who have chosen great poetry — from Hilaire Belloc to e.e. cummings — with expressive references to dreams. These works span 80 years\, from Louise Talma’s charming Let’s Touch the Sky from 1952 to Judith Shatin’s 2021 La Frontera\, a poignant setting of poems by an undocumented teenager at the U.S. southern border\, to Dale Trumbore’s Charting the World\, a newly commissioned piece that will receive its world premiere at this concert. After our first-ever collaboration in May 2022\, The Harlem Chamber Players will again join the chorus on this program\, performing a string quartet by composer\, poet\, and jazz saxophonist Frederick C. Tillis. \nFor Charting the World\, Trumbore has set two poems that capture the wonder of childhood by contemporary poet Diane Thiel. Carol Barnett’s Most Holy Night\, which will receive its New York premiere\, was commissioned by the Minneapolis ensemble VocalEssence in 2015 as part of a project called Quilt Songs\, a cycle of settings of poems inspired by quilts by artist Kay McCarthy. Based on a quilt entitled “Moon River\,” Barnett chose an atmospheric ode to the night by early 20th century English-Franco poet Hilaire Belloc. For her 2008 To Sit and Dream\, composer Rosephanye Powell set lines from a Langston Hughes poem that invites listeners to reach toward dreams of a more just society. \n\n\n\nCharting the World\, World premiere\, commissioned by NAS\nDale Trumbore\n\n\nLa Frontera\nJudith Shatin\n\n\nMost Holy Night\nCarol Barnett\n\n\nYou Can Tell the World\nAlice Parker\n\n\nThe Road Home\nStephen Paulus\n\n\nLet’s Touch the Sky\nLouise Talma\n\n\nTo Sit and Dream\nRosephanye Powell\n\n\nSpiritual Fantasy\nFrederick C. SUMMARY:The World of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:New Amsterdam Singers salutes American composers who have chosen great poetry — from Hilaire Belloc to e.e. cummings — with expressive references to dreams. SUMMARY:The Dream Keeper - Livestream
DESCRIPTION:This ticket is for online streaming. The concert will be available via live stream at 8:00PM Eastern time on Thursday\, May 26\, and via recording for an additional 15 days. Online streaming ticket buyers will receive a link via email that enables them to join the stream. \nWe will be joined by the Harlem Chamber Players for the New York premiere of The Dream Keeper by Philip Lasser. Composed in 2006\, the work for chorus and eight instruments sets poetry by Langston Hughes. In describing his choice of Hughes’ poetry for what he calls a “Secular Cantata\,” Lasser says\, “The wonderful fluidity and subtle flow of his words inspired me to bring into actual melody the music I believe is already embedded in the poems.” You can watch The Dream Keeper composer Philip Lasser talk about why he chose to set poems by Langston Hughes. \nMembers of the Harlem Chamber Players will also perform Lyric Quartette by William Grant Still. Still\, whose works include five symphonies and nine operas\, plus choral and chamber works\, is at the forefront of Black composers of the 20th Century. Composed in 1960\, the string quartet has three movements\, each a musical portrait of a friend of Still’s (“The Sentimental One\,” “The Quiet One\,” and “The Jovial One”). \nAs the culmination of a year-long exploration of choral music from historically underrepresented composers\, we will start the program with a cappella works by six esteemed Black artists\, whose pieces demonstrate a wide variety of styles within the choral form. With The Lee Shore\, the British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor writes in the style of the 19th century part song. With Sicut Cervus composer Rosephanye Powell presents her version of Renaissance counterpoint. Hale Smith’s I’m Coming Home has its roots in jazz. Also on the program are Undine Smith Moore’s arrangement of the spiritual We Shall Walk Through the Valley and powerful works by Adolphus Hailstork and Ulysses Kay. \nTickets are on sale now. \nAll NAS singers and staff are fully vaccinated. SUMMARY:American Voices\, Classic and New – Online Streaming
DESCRIPTION:This ticket is for online streaming. The concert will be available via live stream at 4:00PM Eastern time on Sunday\, March 20\, and via recording for an additional 15 days. Online streaming ticket buyers will receive a link via email that enables them to join the stream. \nThis program of American music is a combination of old favorites and new pieces. Barber’s Reincarnations was last on a New Amsterdam Singers program in 2008\, sung by the Chamber Chorus\, who will sing it again. \nWe first sang Copland’s In the Beginning in 1980 when we put together an all-Copland 80th Birthday Celebration\, attended by the composer. Since it is a great work and a choral showpiece\, we have programmed it periodically over the decades and look forward to performing it again. The piece features soprano soloist Sonya Headlam. Ms. Headlam enjoys a varied career as a soloist\, chamber\, and ensemble singer in a diverse range of repertoire from the Baroque period to the 21st century. She is a member of the Choir of Trinity Wall Street and performs regularly with the Vocalis Consort and the Raritan Players. She joins the Raritan Players on the recently released recording\, In the Salon of Madame Brillon (Acis\, 2021). Season 2021–2022 appearances include performances with TENET Vocal Artists\, the New York Philharmonic\, Apollo’s Fire\, Bang on a Can All-Stars\, and as a soloist in Bach’s Mass in B Minor at the Grand Rapids Bach Festival. Sonya received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Rutgers University\, Mason Gross School of the Arts\, where she currently holds a visiting scholar appointment doing research on the eighteenth-century composer\, Ignatius Sancho. \nThe program will also include a piece by the esteemed American composer Adolphus Hailstork\, and the chorus will perform a work by Undine Smith Moore for the first time. The Chamber Chorus will sing a challenging work by Andrew Rindfleisch that is new to us: Careless Carols on a text by Tagore. Other new works are an arrangement by Ron Perera of e.e. cummings’ poem\, as freedom is a breakfast food\, originally for women\, now for four voices\, and Harlem Night Song by Tara Mack\, an alumna of New Amsterdam Singers. The last of the new pieces is a delightful work by Dale Trumbore\, who is a young composer making her name in the American choral world. In the Middle is a tender\, funny\, rueful look at middle age in our time. \nYou can hear our conductor\, Clara Longstreth\, talk about the program by clicking HERE. \nYou can hear Ellen Stark speak with Tara Mack\, whose composition Harlem Night Song is on the program\, by clicking HERE. \nTickets are on sale now. \nAll NAS singers and staff are fully vaccinated. SUMMARY:American Voices\, Classic and New
DESCRIPTION:This program of American music is a combination of old favorites and new pieces. All audience members will be asked to provide proof of vaccination and to remain masked throughout the performance. \n\n\n\nIn the Beginning\nAaron Copland\n\n\nIn the Middle\nDale Trumbore\n\n\nas freedom is a breakfast food\nRonald Perera\n\n\nWhen Storms Arise\nAdolphus Hailstork\n\n\nLord\, We Give Thanks to Thee\nUndine Smith Moore\n\n\nHarlem Night Song\nTara Mack\n\n\nReincarnations\nSamuel Barber\n\n\nCareless Carols\nAndrew Rindfleisch\n\n\n\nThe same program will also be presented on Friday\, March 18th\, 2022\, at 8PM. SUMMARY:The Return of Song Online
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the online broadcast of our December 2021 concert\, recorded and shared via Zoom! Purchasing access to this event welcomes you to the Zoom premiere on Monday\, December 13\, 2021\, at 8:00PM\, along with the ability to view the recording online through December 31\, 2021. You may also join us in person at Broadway Presbyterian Church on Friday\, December 10\, at 8:00PM or Sunday\, December 12\, at 4:00PM. \nThis concert features the world premiere of the New Amsterdam Singers commission I Go Among Trees by Robert Paterson\, with guest marimbist Makoto Nakura. Paterson chose splendid texts for this 15-minute work: the title poem by renowned poet and nature lover Wendell Berry\, May Sarton’s wry take on the cold weather in New England\, and John Freeman’s fast-moving\, colorful ode to the kestrel. The marimba is a brilliant instrument evoking flight. \nAlso on the program: Vincent Persichetti’s 12-movement Winter Cantata for women’s voices\, flute and marimba; Francis Poulenc’s set of prayers of St. Francis for unaccompanied men’s voices\, featuring the composer’s trademark luminous harmony; and three works by Black composers Rosephanye Powell\, Uzee Brown\, and John Work\, characterized by lively syncopated rhythm or yearning emotion. Plus\, we’ll present the New York premiere of We Will Stand Up by Karen Siegel. Inspired by the youth plaintiffs demanding a stable climate in Juliana vs. United States\, the work was commissioned by a 10-choir consortium. \n\n\n\nI Go Among Trees\, World premiere\, commissioned by NAS\nRobert Paterson\n\n\nWe Will Stand Up\nKaren Siegel\n\n\nWinter Cantata\nVincent Persichetti\n\n\nThe Word was God\nRosephanye Powell\n\n\nDeus in Adjutorium Meum\nBenjamin Britten\n\n\nO Radiant Dawn\nJames MacMillan\n\n\nWake me up\, Lord\nUzee Brown\n\n\nNewborn\nJohn Wesley Work III\n\n\nQuatres petites prières de Saint François d’Assise\nFrancis Poulenc
