SUMMARY:A Century of A Cappella Gems
DESCRIPTION:Clara Longstreth writes of this program\, “I have never received rapturous praise from singers and audiences alike equal to what has been true for Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Chorus. We sang it in 1990 as the main piece on an all-Martin Centennial Concert\, and again in 2008. We now return to this masterpiece in 2019. Almost everything else on the program is new to NAS\, although several are new pieces by well-known composers whose music we love.” \nThe women will sing a lively 2002 work by Arvo Pärt and a lovely one by György Orban. The men will sing a cycle of carols by Halsey Stevens we last performed in 1991. Chamber chorus will sing expressive works by Sisask\, Colin Mawby\, Ešenwalds\, and Petersson. \n\n\n\nAve Maria\nPer Gunnar Petersson\n\n\nBenedicamus\nUrmas Sisask\n\n\nOnly in Sleep\nĒriks Ešenwalds\n\n\nAdam Lay yBounden\nColin Mawby\n\n\nPeace Upon You\, Jerusalem\nArvo Pärt\n\n\nO Gloriosa\nGyörgy Orban\n\n\nFour Carols\nHalsey Stevens\n\n\nMass for Double Chorus\nFrank Martin\n\n\n\nThe same program will be presented on Saturday.

SUMMARY:Tango Mass
DESCRIPTION:Tango Mass \nMartin Palmeri has written a splendid work\, Misa a Buenos Aires or Misatango with strings and bandoneon\, premiered in 1996 and performed frequently since then. This is a wonderfully successful hybrid. The chorus sings the Latin Mass with excellent contrapuntal lines\, not unlike what you might expect from Bach or Mozart\, but with zippier rhythm. Strings and bandoneon supply a great background that is definitely tango inspired. And the combination works! We have chosen an excellent bandoneon player who has played the piece many times. Chamber Chorus will continue the “Latin” theme\, with a return to Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Romancero Gitano with guitar. Our guitar player is a star student of Sharon Isbin at Juilliard. \n\n\n\nRomancero Gitano for chamber chorus and guitar\nMario Castelnuovo-Tedesco\n\n\nMisa a Buenos Aires/Misatango for chorus\, strings\, and bandoneon\nMartin Palmeri\n\n\n\nThis program will also be performed on Thursday.

SUMMARY:The Romantic Spirit: Wild and Tender
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Haydn’s Part Songs Der Greis and Die Beredsamkeit are miniature masterpieces. One is a lament on aging that the composer took so much to heart that he had the message engraved on his calling card: “Gone is all my strength!” The other is a sly\, comic tribute to wine\, which makes man eloquent\, or so he thinks. \nFelix Mendelssohn charms with songs of the outdoors\, praising the woods\, the nightingale\, and the hunt. Hugo Wolf and Johannes Brahms sing of spring and love\, tragic or ecstatic\, in songs for men’s voices and women’s voices. \nThe centerpiece of the program is a set of eleven songs for chorus and piano by Brahms called Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy Songs). In our era we avoid the term ‘gypsy’ since it has been used as a slur and has taken on a pejorative meaning. The term ‘Roma’ is what the ethnic group of wanderers call themselves. However\, for artists and composers of the nineteenth century\, the term gypsy conjured an enticing blend of emotional freedom and romance. Brahms based his song cycle on a set of Hungarian folk songs\, but used his own melodies. The texts are about ardent longing and unrequited love. \nWe also sing two works written in the twenty-first century by American composers. Carol Barnett has written an a cappella work\, Musica\, Dei donmum optimi\, using a Dryden text paired with an anonymous Latin text in praise of music. Dryden’s lines are stirring\, and make reference to the Pythagorean theory of “music of the spheres”: \nThe trumpet shall be heard on high\,\nThe dead shall live\, the living die\nAnd music shall untune the sky. \nThe Chamber Chorus will sing a challenging work\, Peter Quince at the Clavier\, by Robert Cohen. The Wallace Stevens poem deals with the story of Susanna and the Elders from an apocryphal addition to the Book of Daniel. The music changes key thirteen times in the span of a ten-minute piece. Often the singers ascend a scale in one key\, but return in another. The poem has been much studied by scholars for its dense and allusive lines\, full of musical imagery. \n\n\n\nThree Songs from opus 59\nFelix Mendelssohn\n\n\n   Abschied vom Walde\n\n\n   Die Nachtigall\n\n\n   Jagdlied\n\n\nMusica\, Dei donmum optimi New York premiere\nCarol Barnett\n\n\nDie Beredsamkeit\nJoseph Haydn\n\n\nDer Greis\nJoseph Haydn\n\n\nPeter Quince at the Clavier\nRobert Cohen\n\n\nIm Sommer\nHugo Wolf\n\n\nMailied\nHugo Wolf\n\n\nDer Braütigam\nJohannes Brahms\n\n\nDie Braut\nJohannes Brahms\n\n\nZigeunerlieder
